INTERNATIONALLY ORIENTED

YOU’RE NOT ALONE

LEAVING HOME OR YOUR JOB FOR A FOREIGN UNIVERSITY CAN BE EXCITING AND DAUNTING. BE ENCOURAGED: YOU’RE NOT THE ONLY ONE EMBARKING ON THE ADVENTURE OF STUDYING ABROAD.

Guess what? You will join over 3,000 international students at the UT and over 100,000 in the Netherlands. According to figures published by Studyinholland.nl, the total number of international students enrolled in Dutch higher education in 2017-18 was over 122,000 – a record number for our country. These students represent 164 different nationalities. This record figure shouldn’t surprise you, because many universities around the world are growing increasingly international.

WE CHERISH OUR ‘INTERNATIONALS’

Here at the UT, we are firm believers in internationalization. We currently have just over 11,000 students, almost 3,300 of whom are international students, representing 102 nationalities.

The total number of Master’s students is just over 4,200. We’re pleased to see these numbers growing; in fact, we proactively organize activities and services to help our international students make Enschede their home away from home – as you are soon to find out. This is not just because we recognize studying abroad as a great opportunity for personal development and intercultural exchange. It also stems from our conviction that international exchange enriches the academic community, broadens your network and ours, and raise our joint societal impact as researchers, educators, scientists and professionals. We look forward to welcoming you as a member of our colourful, ambitious community!

MANY ENGLISH-TAUGHT PROGRAMMES

Dutch universities offer the largest number of English-taught programmes – more than 2,100 – in all of continental Europe. At the UT, 16 of our Bachelor’s and 32 of our Master’s programmes are taught entirely in English.

HIGH EDUCATIONAL QUALITY

Dutch education is widely acclaimed (see also page [number]), while tuition fees and the cost of living are lower than those in most English-speaking countries. As for housing in Enschede, it is cheaper here than in any other student city in the Netherlands – as well as many cities in other countries.

A LOT OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

As the figures above show, there are a lot of students from other countries in the Netherlands. Businesses, research institutes, government agencies and universities are also very internationally minded. Our open and direct culture makes it easy to connect. And the UT has the highest amount of spin-off companies in Europe.

SAFEST, HAPPIEST COUNTRIES

The 2019 Global Peace index and the OECD Better Life Index rank the Netherlands as one of the safest and also one of the 10 happiest countries in the world, respectively.
